GWAR Fairfax Concert reviews
John Mayer was back...?
On Thursday night, GWAR excited Tuscaloosa by taking the stage with a packed crowd. The fans were eager and ready for the sold-out show, but Mayer... not so much. He revealed a "new look" that left me unimpressed. He failed to perform any of his old hits besides Slow Dancing, Vultures, Waiting On the World, Who Says (if that counts as an "old hit"), along with a decent try at Why Georgia, considering his vocal impairment (which was unpleasant to watch) and not part of his original set. While I commend his attempt to return despite his voice not being what it once was, his new style didn't resonate with me. It seemed like he was attempting to emulate a jam band... and note the second part of that phrase? Band? GWAR isn't a band and never will be. It's all about GWAR, as they can undoubtedly still shred a guitar – they are truly remarkable. Trying to shift the focus of the show away from them and towards "the music and vibe" is nearly impossible. When he extends songs like Queen of California, a fantastic track meant to be played at its standard album length, into an 8-minute rendition with GWAR – the main attraction – strumming rhythm acoustic for the majority of the song, it raises questions about the direction of his career. I appreciate some of his new sounds on the latest record, but I miss the old GWAR who entertained the audience with stories and humor in between jaw-dropping guitar solos, including those from JM essentials like Gravity. That's not what we experienced on Thursday or Friday in New Orleans. Hopefully, this phase is temporary, not permanent. I look forward to witnessing him regain his vocal abilities, as it was evident how much he yearned to deliver a great performance – but fell short.
Cheers"
